Excavation in Manalur

Phase 7 excavations began on February 13 last year in the lower reaches near Thiruppuvanam in Sivangai district. Excavations are underway at three locations, Bottom, Agaram and Kontagai. Sixth Phase Excavations Agaram, Kontagai. Manalur also took place in the four lower, places. The Archaeological Survey of India has announced that the 7th phase of excavations will take place at the above four sites. Two months after the commencement of excavations, excavations were not commenced only in Manalur.

Work has not started in Manalur due to confusion in site selection. Seven pits were dug in Manalur during the 6th phase excavation and only 39 objects were found so the authorities were careful in selecting the right site for the 7th phase excavation.

Archaeologists have now excavated an acre of land belonging to Janaki Ammal of Manalur. Villages including Manalur, Agaram and Kalugerkadai will be completed at the Manalur Muniandi Temple when the Mulaipari festival is held. It is planned to start excavations at the site in Manalur as the event continues till date and may be related to ancient times and the sprouting festival.

Excavations are scheduled to be completed soon as the rainy season begins in September. Below are just three pits so far

Excavated terracotta tombstones, stone plows and pottery have been found. Work is currently underway to dig two more pits. Three pits each are being dug at Kontagai and Agaram and work is in progress.
